Remove Tree Sap from Your Hands with Coconut Oil and Salt

Getting tree sap off your hands can be a challenge, but a simple exfoliating rub made from oil and salt will do the trick nicely.

Whether you’re working in the yard or just trimming and hauling that Christmas tree, you’re likely to come down with a case of sap hands that regular washing just won’t clean. Chefs have been using a salt and oil scrub for years to help remove garlic and onion odors and to help soften dishpan hands. As The Kitchn shows us, you can make up a scrub ahead of time and keep it around, but it’s just as easy to dump a little kosher salt and oil of your choice in your hands on the fly.

It’s great at removing tree sap and grease from your hands and, as a bonus, will leave them feeling nice and soft. I use olive oil, but anything will do. Coconut oil is great if you’re going to make your scrub ahead of time, because it stays solid at room temperature and you can just scoop it out of the jar. If you don’t like the smell of coconut, though, make sure you get a refined coconut oil and you’ll never smell it.
